With Blood Oranges all around in the markets, one cannot help but dream of mixing it with various spirits. The rich color that evokes afternoons, languishing around a table with friends, sipping away into evening, when the first glimmer of a star appears. Puts one in a sanguine state of mind.
The Sanguine Attitude
1 ounce of freshly squeezed Blood Orange Juice
.5 ounce of fresh lemon juice
1 ounce of Homemade Hibiscus Syrup*
2 oz. Of Vodka, or gin, or cachaca, or rum, or................
Prosecco (preferably Pink!)
Orange flower water
Blood Orange Peel garnish
Coupe or Martini Glass
Cut a peel of the Blood Orange (with as little pith/white part) as possible before squeezing the juice from 1 Blood Orange and 1/2 of a lemon, set aside to use as garnish.
Add the juices, syrup, and vodka into a shaker filled with ice, shake.
Either place orange blossom water in a small spray bottle and spritz the interior of the glass, or swirl a small amount around the glass and discard any extra.
Pour the shaker contents in the glass and top up with Prosecco.
*Hibiscus Ginger Syrup
2 T. Dried Hibiscus Flowers (Flor de Jamaica),
1 cup pure cane sugar,
1 cup water,
A small piece of peeled and grated fresh gingerroot, I leave this ambiguous as everyone as their own feeling about how much to use, if at all.
Bring sugar and water to boil until sugar dissolves, remove from heat, add the Hibiscus and ginger and let steep for about a half an hour, strain and the syrup is ready to use.
